Golden Sunset, Blue Rain and ‘Spiritual Musicking’
Golden Sunset, Blue Rain is the overall title of an electro-acoustic work that I have been working on for roughly a decade. Originally, I created this music as a personal ‘sonic driver’ for altering my own state of consciousness in order to undertake shamanic journeys into the worlds of nonordinary reality (NOR). My music-making practice therefore fuels my spiritual practice and Golden Sunset, Blue Rain is my personal power song; a call to the world of Spirit.

The earliest realisations of Golden Sunset, Blue Rain. Music for shamanic journeying and ‘Spiritual Musicking’.
Golden Sunset, Blue Rain, Vol. 2 consists of one 48-minute shamanic soundscape soundscape divided into 8 gapless tracks.
Volume 3 contains two realisations of Golden Sunset, Blue Rain: ‘Flight’ and ‘Worlds Apart’.
Golden Sunset, Blue Rain, Vol. 4 contains two pieces: ‘Lower World’ and ‘Sky Cry’.
The Functional use of Golden Sunset, Blue Rain
I use my different realisations of Golden Sunset, Blue Rain to undertake my own shamanic journeys in NOR. When I journey, I use a method devised by Michael Harner in the early 1980s called ‘simultaneous narration’. I do this in order to preserve my experiences in NOR for my future reference as, sometimes, symbolic events in previous shamanic journeys gain more significance with the passing of time.
Here, as I undertake a shamanic journey, I record the sound of my speaking voice, describing my experiences in realtime. This narration is from the moment I press record and begin listening to my music, through to changing my state of consciousness, through to experiencing events in the spirit worlds in NOR, and ending after I return back to ordinary reality (OR).
After completing a shamanic journey, I listen back to my recorded simultaneous narration and, in realtime to this, I create an oil pastel sketch to visually render the events of the journey for myself on A3 paper. One of these oil pastel sketches is seen below, which was a journey to ‘Summoning the Ancestors’. I am the first to admit that I am no trained sketcher, drawer or visual artist, and so I use a simple stick man to represent myself in each journey.
My music-making is but only one component of a much larger process that encompasses the spiritual functionality of the music and the process of undertaking, documenting and analysing my shamanic experiences in relation to the realisations of Golden Sunset, Blue Rain. I call this macro process ‘Spiritual Musicking’, developing upon Christopher Small’s concept of ‘Musicking’ (1998). The model below, taken from my PhD thesis, shows The ‘Spiritual Musicking’ of Golden Sunset, Blue Rain.
