‘Universal Expansion’ [single]

About this release:

‘Universal Expansion’ is a 3-track single of music composed for a 70cm Thomann wind ‘Feng’ gong. Owing to its almost flat design and no rim, wind gongs produce an enormous range of sound, from deep rumbles to roaring washes. The sound of a wind gong is timeless, almost primal, ideal for using in therapeutic and healing contexts.

In this release, the wind gong has been played using a plethora of different-sized mallets, flumies (friction mallets), gong gadgets (‘Echoes’), and steel and bamboo brushes, to bring out an enormous variety of sounds from this incredible instrument.

In track 1 (‘Universal Expansion’), the wind gong is played primarily with the Dragonfly Articulate mallet, a hard mallet that brings out the shimmering overtones. In the middle section,’Flumies’ (friction mallets) are used to provide tonal and textural contrast.

In track 2 (‘Gemini Echoes’), the wind gong is played with Gemini I and Gemini II mallets (handmade by Epic Mallets), as well as ‘Echoes’ (gong gadgets also handmade by Epic Mallets).

In track 3 (‘Feng Gong Swing’), the wind gong is played more rhythmically with steel and bamboo brushes, resulting in a more experimental jazzy soundworld.
