Sound Therapy & Mantra Therapy FAQs

General FAQs

What instruments do you work with?

In order to help clients with a range of issues, I work with a variety of different types of sacred sound instruments in my sound therapy work:

Himalayan (metal) singing bowls. I specialise in playing a number of different types of ethically sourced handmade metal singing bowls, including very rare antique bowls, alongside modern therapy bowls. The bowls all vary in size, weight, and shape, and they each produce different frequencies. Owing to the huge range of frequencies and bowl sizes that I work with, my Himalayan bowls can be used for all aspects of sound therapy from relaxation to chakra balancing and chakra cleansing, through to helping with other issues such as insomnia, anxiety, depression, and even issues with physical pains such as fibromyalgia and migraines.

Ting-sha cymbals and bell. Closely related to the Himalayan singing bowls, these instruments produce the classic meditation ‘ding’ sound. I also work with a pair of antique Newari Chusya cymbals, which are fantastic for space clearing.

Shamanic frame drums. Played with the hands, my frame drums are all vegan-friendly and produce amazingly rich overtones, ideal for grounding and shamanic work.

Ocean Drum. This large 22-inch ocean drum is filled with metal beads and it is made with synthetic skins on both sides of the frame. It produces a phenomenal range of sounds, from gentle lapping beach waves to roaring ocean storms! It is ideal for grounding, shamanic work, and connecting with the element of water.

Tongue drums. Played with small rubber beaters, these pitched percussion instruments produce bright, positive, and uplifting sounds.

Koshi wind chimes. The four Koshi wind chimes, with each one named after each element (Earth, Air, Fire, and Water), produce gentle, calming tones and chords, perfect for relaxation and journeying.

Rattles, Rainsticks, and shakers. As with the drums, these are used for grounding and shamanic work.

Chau gong. I use a handheld 12-inch Chau gong to play over and around clients. It is ideal for grounding and cleansing the aura.

Shruti box. An Indian drone instrument, which I use for accompanying mantra chanting/affirmation chanting.

Voice. I chant Sanskrit mantras and I AM affirmations, as well as overtone singing.

Are you a medical doctor?

No, my title Dr refers to my academic title [incidentally, the title Dr originated in academic circles long before it was used in the medical profession]. I successfully completed and defended my practice-based PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) degree in Sonic Art in 2019. My specialism is in creating music for inducing altered states of consciousness and undertaking shamanic journeying. The music from my doctorate,  Golden Sunset, Blue Rain, has subsequently been commercially released across four albums and is available on every major streaming and download platform. Additionally, my meditation music has also been used on BBC Sounds Mindful Mix – The Sleeping Forecast.

Where do you buy your Himalayan singing bowls from?

I buy my Himalayan singing bowls from Temple Sounds run by Alex Jackson, the leading supplier in the UK. You can buy a bowls from Alex on Etsy using this link (which includes a discount code).

Group Sound Baths FAQs

Is it a gong bath?

No. Although I do use one handheld Chau gong in some of my sound baths, it would be disingenuous to call my events a gong bath. During a gong bath, one would usually expect the practitioner to be using multiple large gongs as the main instrumental focus of their sound journey meditation. There are already numerous established gong practitioners in and around the Cheshire and Greater Manchester areas, and so I offer something different. My specialisms are in playing Himalayan (metal) singing bowls and chanting Sanskrit mantras.

How long does your sound bath last?

Most of the sound baths I run are scheduled to last one hour, as this has proven to be the most popular duration with my regular clients. I always advertise the duration of each sound bath on the Sound Baths page of my website, should there ever be any upcoming special events with a variation to this duration.

What should I bring with me to your sound bath?

Please bring your own yoga mat (or a sleeping bag, or an inflatable mattress), pillow, and blanket. Additionally, you may wish to bring a bottle/flask of water. Some clients also choose to bring a blindfold.

I’ve booked a place(s) on your sound bath via Eventbrite. Do you need to see my e-ticket when I arrive?

There is no need to show me your e-ticket when you arrive as Eventbrite informs me when you have booked your place(s), so I will already have your name(s) on my register.

What should I wear to your sound bath?

Please wear comfy clothes. You will be lying down on a yoga mat (or in a sleeping bag) on the floor for the session, so it is important to feel comfortable. Usually, clients remove their shoes so that the positive sound vibrations can flow through their toes and feet.

I can’t lie down on the floor for long – can I sit upright during your sound bath instead?

Yes, absolutely, you can sit throughout the sound bath if that is more comfortable for you. You can always change position during the sound bath depending on your needs.

I haven’t been to your sound bath before, what do I do when I get to the venue?

Please introduce yourself to me when you arrive, as I always enjoy welcoming new clients and answering any questions that you may have before the sound bath starts. I will help you find a comfy place and I will give you an overview of what to expect in the session.

What will I experience when I attend your sound bath?

Everyone will experience something different in every sound bath they attend. This can be affected by a number of things, including your mood on arriving at the sound bath, the events happening in your life at the time, your levels of stress/anxiety/depression, etc. Sometimes you may attend a sound bath and simply hear and feel the sound vibrations and nothing more, and that is absolutely fine. Here is a list of some of the things that my clients have told me they have experienced from attending my sound baths:

– Tingling sensations throughout their whole body.

– Seeing flashes of colour(s) triggered by different sounds.

– A deep sense of relaxation (some clients even fall asleep during the sound bath!).

– A drop in body temperature (owing to the relaxed state).

– Clearing of energy blocks and emotional releases.

– Journeying to other worlds and times, and seeing images triggered by the sounds.

– Meeting the spirits of departed loved ones.

How is your sound bath session structured?

I begin each sound bath with a guided meditation, lasting circa 10 minutes. The guided meditation has a different focus in every session, so each sound bath is unique. Some of the guided meditations focus entirely on breathwork, others on the chakras, and others on stimulating creative visualisation.

The guided meditation segues directly into the main component of the sound bath, the sounding of the instruments, which lasts approximately 45 minutes. Here I play a variety of instruments including Himalayan singing bowls, Koshi wind chimes, rattles, shakers, cymbals, rainsticks, and shamanic frame drums. Every sound bath is different, so I vary the order in which I sound the instruments. During this part of the sound bath, I also play instruments over and around each client so that everyone gets a personal experience of the sound vibrations.

I usually end the sound bath with several minutes of silence before bringing clients back into a waking state.

For the sound baths scheduled in the evenings, I also use a swirling nebula star projector light (projected onto the ceiling) throughout the sessions to create an immersive experience in both light and sound. Photosensitive clients may wish to bring a blindfold.

Do you offer private/bespoke group sound baths for special occasions, e.g. hen parties, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.?

Yes, absolutely, but only at the weekends in the local area and at indoor venues. I would need to know what date your special event is happening, how many people you would be expecting, and the location. Please send queries about private group sound baths to: soundandmantratherapy@gmail.com

Individual Sound & Mantra Therapy Treatments FAQs

How long does an individual treatment session last?

I tailor each individual treatment session to the requirements of each client.

How many individual sessions will I need?

Some clients may only feel they need one session, whilst others may feel they need regular sessions. How many sessions are needed is always down to the client.

How do I book an individual sound therapy treatment session?

Please complete the form on the Sound & Mantra Therapy page. I will then contact you and arrange to have a free 20-minute online consultation so that I can find out what you need help with. I will then ask you to complete an online client consent and declaration form (which only needs to be completed once per client unless any information changes during the course of treatment). We can then arrange our first individual treatment session.

Is there anything I should do before attending an individual treatment session?

If it is your first session, please make sure you have completed the client consent and declaration form (this only needs to be completed once per client unless any information changes during the course of treatment). I recommend that you do not eat a large meal immediately before a treatment session as you will be lying down for most of the session. Please bring your own blanket, pillow, and water.

Which would I be better suited to, an individual treatment session or a group sound bath?

If you are unsure about having an individual treatment session, I would advise that you attend one of my group sound baths first so that you have an idea of what instruments and sounds I work with.

The individual sessions are different from the group sound baths in that they are an active collaboration between the client and myself, whereas the group sound baths are guided and are therefore experienced by the client passively.

For individual treatments, I always tailor the use of the instruments to a client’s needs, whereas in a group sound bath I will sound a variety of different types of instruments.
